Have a strong support system. The first few days after surgery will be difficult and a helping hand will be necessary to get around. Making sure you have someone you trust to look after you from the drive home until you are on your own two feet is very important. You also don't want to compromise the outcome of your surgery by over exerting yourself, so let your friends and family help.
Set up a recovery area at your home prior to your surgery. The best space for you to recuperate is somewhere comfortable and central to all your needs, such as a restroom, television, food, water, and a phone. Be sure to have some distractions readily available to help pass time while recovering. Getting up and moving around can be very exhausting, so plan ahead to make it as easy as possible.
Prepare meals. The last thing you will feel like doing is standing in the kitchen preparing your meals, however, it is very important you stay well nourished and hydrated. Having food prepared prior to your surgery is an excellent idea. Bland foods such as crackers and soups are also a great option to avoid nausea and vomiting. We recommend drinking Gatorade and fruit juices as opposed to water to keep hydrated without causing nausea.
Wear Comfy Clothing. Having a proper post–procedure wardrobe is also a must. This is not to make a fashion statement, but rather to find clothing that will be both comfortable and practical. You'll be thankful to have clothes set out that are easy to put on and take off. The less work you have to do, the better. Also, wearing darker colors can help camouflage any bodily fluids or post–care ointments.
Focus on the end result. Don't let the swelling or bruising discourage you. After any surgical procedure, you'll experience downtime and may not look or feel your best for a few weeks. After the swelling subsides, the bruises fade and the new you will shine through – you'll be happy to find it was worth the wait. So be patient and give your body the time it needs to heal.
Select Your Surgeon Wisely. And last but not least, the number one tip to achieve a happy recovery and post–operative experience is to have realistic expectations AND to select only a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon. You can rest assured knowing that you are receiving the best care and are in safe hands with someone who has the proper education and training.
